Bowel Cancer Awareness Month
Bowel Cancer makes up 13% of all cancer cases in the UK and as such it is imperative to raise awareness of preventative lifestyle advice and of symptoms for quick diagnosis during the April Awareness Month. 54% of bowel cancer cases each year in the UK are linked to major lifestyle and other risk factors, so making sure you eat well and exercise regularly is certainly a worthwhile goal. Parkinson’s Awareness Week
Parkinson’s Awareness Week is the biggest opportunity of the year to help the public understand the reality of life with Parkinson’s and what they can do to help. This year’s Parkinson’s Awareness Week, 10th – 16th April, is themed around encouraging kindness and patience. Holding open a door or understanding that a queue may take a little longer can make all the difference to the confidence of someone with Parkinson’s who is trying to maintain a normal life. Campaigns will encourage the public to be nicer to everyone – and spread the message that small acts of kindness are especially helpful to people with Parkinson’s. Deaf Awareness Week
We all know how important it is to have our eyes tested regularly, but many of us ignore failing hearing and write it off as a symptom of getting older. As many as 16% of UK residents, equating to millions of people, experience some degree of hearing loss. Deaf Awareness Week, from 15th – 21st May, is as much about informing people of how they can help those with hearing loss as it is about helping those with hearing loss find out about services and products which can help improve their lives. Dementia Awareness Week
In 2015 there were 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to 1 million by 2025 – almost everyone knows someone affected by this awful disease. The Alzheimer’s Society aims to foster a better understanding of the disease to both those diagnosed and their families. Dementia Awareness Week 2017 will take place from 14th- 20th May. Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Heath Awareness Month across the UK, and England is celebrating 8th – 14th May as Mental Health Week. It is a time to celebrate the advances in the mental health field and to bring awareness of the ongoing struggles of those with mental illness. Awareness is key if we want to put to rest stigmas that persist surrounding mental illness, especially with illnesses like depression, anxiety and bi-polar disorder.
